Online rehab for addiction
What is online rehab?
Online rehab means therapy and structured addiction support delivered via video rather than in a clinic room. It is a form of outpatient treatment. You stay at home and attend sessions remotely, rather than living in or travelling to a facility.
Video sessions are real-time appointments. You and your therapist can see and hear each other through a secure platform. The therapeutic work — understanding what drives your use, building coping strategies, strengthening motivation, planning for long-term change — is the same as in face-to-face treatment.
Online programmes can include individual therapy, group work, family or couples sessions, relapse prevention planning, and, where needed, coordination with a prescribing clinician or GP.
Who is online rehab for?
Online addiction treatment suits people who are medically stable, have a safe home environment, and can focus during sessions without significant disruption or active triggers in the background.
Online rehab is likely to suit you if:
- Your dependency is mild to moderate and you are not at risk from physical withdrawal
- You have completed inpatient detox and need ongoing therapy
- You need treatment that fits around work, caring responsibilities, or travel
- Privacy matters to you and you prefer not to attend a clinic in person
- You are stepping down from residential or intensive treatment and want continuity
Online rehab is unlikely to be enough on its own if:
- You need medically supervised detox — particularly for alcohol or benzodiazepines
- You have a history of severe withdrawal complications including seizures or delirium
- You are in crisis or feel unable to keep yourself safe
- Your home environment is chaotic or makes staying away from substances very difficult
- You have a complex mental health presentation requiring closer clinical monitoring
In many of these situations, online therapy still has a role — but as part of a wider plan rather than the starting point. Inpatient detox first, then online therapy and aftercare, is a common and appropriate pathway.
