Does private health insurance cover rehab in the UK?
Sometimes, yes.
Major UK health insurers, including Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva and Vitality, can cover addiction treatment when it is clinically recommended. But plenty of policies exclude it, so the policy document decides, not the brand name. Where cover exists, addiction is treated as a medical condition, not a lifestyle choice. Cover is never automatic, two people with the same insurer can have completely different benefits, and almost every policy requires approval before you are admitted. Check first, book second.
What does insurance usually cover?
Depending on the policy, cover can include medically supervised detox, residential (inpatient) rehab, outpatient therapy, and psychiatric assessment. Detox on its own is sometimes only approved as part of a wider treatment plan. Aftercare is covered by some policies and not others, so ask about it specifically.
What is usually not covered?
Some policies exclude drug and alcohol treatment altogether, so check the exclusions list before anything else. Beyond that, common exclusions are pre-existing conditions (anything declared or treated before the policy started), luxury extras, repeat stays after a previous claim, and anything the insurer judges not medically necessary. Many policies also cap the number of inpatient days or the total amount payable per year, so partial cover is common: the insurer pays some of the stay and you pay the rest.
