The Nelson Trust offers abstinence-based treatment utilising a holistic approach incorporating the development of recovery capital alongside relapse prevention with a trauma informed, gender responsive individualised package of care. Trauma informed support begins with the understanding that for many, abusing substances has been the only way to cope with situations they have faced in life. With our support, clients living with us begin to build safety and feel connected with themselves and the world around them. This enables process of healing to occur without the need for substances as a support. We understand that for those seeking long term recovery, a package of care that is tailored to meet specific needs relating to trauma, substance misuse, family systems, recovery capital, relapse prevention and resilience building, alongside ETE, creative outlets, outdoor pursuits, resettlement opportunities and a strong aftercare package are crucial to ensuring our clients move on with a solid foundation for recovery and an achievable plan for the future in plac
We offer fortnightly family support group which is accessible online. Our family recovery workshop is designed to give guidance to those who are close to someone with an addiction. This 2 day workshop is delivered by experienced, qualified staff who help support family members and loved ones to make sense of their situation, learn how to manage anger, guilt, shame, isolation and anxiety, understand addiction, relapse and early recovery provides an opportunity for family members to come together with others who have shared similar experiences. We provide parents in recovery groups weekly alongside 1-1 support sessions around parenting. We provide parents in recovery groups weekly alongside 1-1 support sessions around parenting. After an initial settling in period and assessment of suitability, we have a self-contained, two bedroom flat which is solely for visiting purposes between parents and children. This environment is designed to provide a child friendly, safe visiting space that does not have a clinical feel and provides a “home style” visit to support our clients in maintain their attachments with children. This facility is available for our clients and their children up to age 14 to work towards full weekend overnight night visits subject to agreement.
The family flat is equipped with DVD player, TV a range of toys and games, full cooking facilities and a bathroom with shower alongside two bedrooms, one with a double bed and overhead bunk and a single bedroom.

Whilst we make every attempt to support our clients to successfully complete treatment, prior to every admission, our team works closely with referrers to ensure that an emergency exit plan is in place to support with a premature departure. In the event of a client leaving early, our primary consideration is the safety of that client. In the first instance we contact referrers to ensure they are aware, we then work with the client to ensure a transport plan is in place, a next steps plan is activated and where appropriate a naloxone pen is reissued to the client (providing this was brought when admitted) and harm minimisation and a safer discharge pack is issued, warning against the dangers of lowered tolerances and overdose risk. We aim to avoid discharging late at night and to provide assistance in securing safe accommodation wherever possible. Medication will be returned to the client, as appropriate according the risk factors. We will inform next of kin if required and provide a comprehensive exit report.
Nelson Trust has four resettlement houses that clients can access when they are ready to complete residential treatment. The resettlement accommodation is un-staffed, self catering, 'low support' housing, either in shared houses or in self contained studios, and is offered for up to 12 months on a licence agreement. Every resident has an individual support plan and a named support worker; house groups are held weekly and support staff visit the houses regularly. Residents are offered help with accessing independent move-on accommodation. Rent in resettlement housing is covered by Housing Benefit so no further funding is required.

Clients already in Tier 4 treatment may be offered an overnight assessment. The client is allocated a room for the night, attends the morning programme and has one-on-one assessment with an experienced recovery worker.
Alternatively, a client may come for a day assessment which will include a tour of the facilities and a one-to-one assessment.
Clients unable to attend for a face to face assessment will be offered a telephone assessment. If appropriate, we would then admit on a one month trial basis. Occasionally, an assessor will travel to a prison or hospital to conduct a face to face assessment.
