Therapeutic community
Clouds House approaches substance misuse from the viewpoint that is a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual illness which, if not treated, will in many cases lead to premature death. The structured treatment programme comprises group therapy, including men's and women's groups, education through lectures, workshops, educational videos, one-to-one counselling. There are also reading/writing assignments, creative workshops such as creative writing and art therapy.

Accompanied children of residents are welcome to visit on Sunday, the visiting day. A dedicated counsellor, focused on supporting visiting family members and friends, co-ordinates visiting day and provides a specialist family lecture as well as confidential family meetings by individual arrangement and in liaison with the client.

Most clients are admitted with a care plan already in place. Clouds House therefore works with the referring agency/agencies in planning clients' future care. The treatment team formulates a continuing care plan. The treatment team provides guidance when a client is discharged prematurely.
By the time treatment is completed, recommendations for continuing care will have been formulated by a member of the counselling team, in liaison with the service user and referrer. This may involve referral to extended or second-stage treatment for a further rehabilitation programme which may last several months.
The service user may return home and be offered further support within their local community through a suitable agency or may return to Clouds House to make use of our aftercare services. Attendance at regular AA/NA meetings is strongly recommended. All those completing the treatment programme at Clouds House are invited to the annual reunion.
We also deliver community treatment in Liverpool and across Essex. Our Self-Help Addiction Recovery Programme (SHARP) is the starting point for long term recovery and abstinence, and that it also leads to improvements in participants’ physical and psychological health, self-efficacy and overall quality of life. Whereas many of those with addiction issues notoriously pass through the revolving door of community-based treatment services, independent evaluation of our community recovery programme in Essex shows that almost 80% of our clients did not return to any treatment service following completion of our programme.

Any individual or agency may make an initial enquiry. Following receipt of a completed Referral Form, medical information is sought from the client's GP and any other health professionals as appropriate. A pre-treatment assessment conducted by the assessment team (made up of medical, counselling, referrals and admissions staff) will establish a diagnosis by considering these reports. A risk assessment will determine suitability for treatment and a decision will be based on the outcome of this. Waiting time for admission will be dependent on the length of time taken to receive medical/health reports, appropriate funding being agreed, the assessment procedure being satisfactorily completed and bed availability. On admission to Clouds House, any accompanying family members are encouraged to meet with a member of the Families Counselling Team who can offer help and support during and after the treatment period. From reception, clients are taken to the treatment centre by a member of staff and introduced to the nursing team on duty.
